BBC: Is that our dream life?

Will we ever... photosynthesise like plants?

Increase demand for food production is one of the greatest issues for the sustainable development of humanities. Instead of consuming food, is it possible to feed us with alternative energy: light?

According to this article, there are a few exceptional evidences that not only plants but also animals, such as pea aphid and Oriental hornet, are capable of photosynthesis. Besides, some non-photosynthetic organisms form a partnership with photosynthetic organisms, which provide their partners with energy.

So, it sounds not 100% impossible for us to acquire photosynthetic ability, only if we abandon the way we live and begin to live like plants. Generally speaking, animals need more energy than plants, due to, e.g., physical movements or the maintenance of body temperature. In order to gain sufficient energy to maintain our metabolism, we need to enlarge the surface area to its volume and always stand still.

If humanities were capable of photosynthesise, the food shortage problem would be completely solved and we might live happier, feeling safe and secure. However, we would lose our greatest joy to enjoy delicacies.
